About Cathy

I am a national board certified teacher librarian working in Spartanburg School District 6 at Dorman High School. I have 23 years of previous experience in education, most of that experience in library media. I have 2 Master's Degrees and still do not feel I am finished learning. I participate in several online networking sites, including Classroom 2.0, Teacher Librarian Network, Twitter, and other venues where connected educators congregate. I blog at TechnoTuesday: Cathy Nelson's Professional Thoughts, and I immensely enjoy the conversations of the blogosphere. I am married and have two wonderful sons ( a college junior and high school senior). I also have 3 cats and yellow lab.

Hey, Cathy...I'm here! I'm not as active a member as you are...I do enjoy reading your posts, though. Thanks for your enthusiastic discussions!

I've been enjoying lurking on the SCASL Nigng since its inception. Just caught my breath after an update in USC's Blackboard to version 8. I wanted to be a part of this type of communication with other members of SCASL for many reasons. One, is my concern about how we can help one another plan and implement strategies for advocating for continuing certified library media specialists in all our schools in significant ratio to students and teachers so that they can positively impact student achievement. If school librarians are seen as non essential to student achievement, I am worried that the profession will become nothing more than "collateral damage" in the South Carolina Legislature's war with the budget and the school districts's struggles with budgets. As a start, I gave a pep talk to school library media candidates for certification who will be completing internships this spring about professionalism and using their experiences to become the best that they can be. I'd like to hear from others about what they are doing in their own schools to advocate for the profession and how they are documenting and sharing information with administrators about how, as school librarians, they are positively impacting student achievement.

Thanks Cathy! My main issue these days is having enough time to do all of these things...same issue everyone else has...right? Looks like an exciting and resourceful tool and I look forward to using it:-)

The ning should prove to be another way to communicate and share information and network with our colleagues across the state. However, the BIG issue looming on the horizon is how can we be positive advocates for continuing certified library media specialists in ALL our schools in adequate numbers to really affect student achievement in positive ways. In these very tight budget times quite a few districts are having to make serious personnel decisions. One of those decisions is to cut library media specialist positions. If these districts decide to cut the second library media position due to budget cuts, can cutting all library media specialist positions be far behind? These are scary times.

Cathy - Great suggestions on adding the SCASL blog & SCASL Flicker - except now the most recent photo is of me in the LE library. Someone please go add some more pictures to the Flickr account ASAP! :)

I recently read Nutcracker Noel to 300 students at one time and they loved it! So I guess that's my current favorite.
